Protecting Your Guitar From Humidity Damage

Why humidity swings are one of the biggest threats to a guitar's wood, and how to keep conditions stable.

A guitar is largely wood and glue, both of which respond to moisture in the air. Humidity swings are one of the most common causes of long-term damage to guitars, and unlike a scratch or a worn fret, humidity damage can be expensive or impossible to fully repair.

The Target Range

Guitars generally do best kept between roughly 40% and 55% relative humidity, with electric guitars tolerating a slightly wider range up to around 60%. Staying within that band keeps the wood from either drying out or absorbing excess moisture.

What Goes Wrong at Each Extreme

Air that's too dry pulls moisture out of the wood, which can cause it to shrink, crack, and lead to sharp fret ends or buzzing as the wood contracts around the frets. Air that's too humid has the opposite effect โ€” the wood absorbs moisture and can swell, warp, or in extreme or prolonged cases, develop mold.

Practical Steps to Keep Conditions Stable

Storing the guitar in its case rather than leaving it out on a stand full-time offers real protection, since a hard case buffers against humidity swings far better than an open room or a gig bag. Keep the guitar away from windows, exterior doors, and other drafty spots, and avoid attics, basements, or garages, which typically lack climate control and swing widely with the seasons. A hygrometer โ€” a small digital humidity meter โ€” placed in the case or room lets you actually track conditions instead of guessing, and a room humidifier or a silica gel pack in the case can help correct humidity that's drifted out of range.
