Acoustic Guitar Strings

Acoustic guitar strings are built around a steel core wrapped with a bronze alloy winding, and the specific alloy used has a real effect on the guitar's voice. The two most common windings are 80/20 bronze, made from roughly 80% copper and 20% zinc, which produces a bright, punchy, vibrant tone that mellows fairly quickly as the strings age; and phosphor bronze, which swaps some zinc for phosphorus, giving a warmer, darker tone that tends to hold its brightness a bit longer. Beyond alloy, strings are sold by gauge (thickness), which changes tension, volume, and how hard the strings are to fret.

Types

• 80/20 bronze — bright, articulate, crisp attack; tone mellows relatively quickly with play.
• Phosphor bronze — warmer, fuller-sounding, slightly longer-lasting brightness than 80/20 bronze.
• Coated strings — any winding alloy treated with a thin polymer coating to resist corrosion and extend string life, at a small cost to brightness.
• Gauge — commonly ranges from "extra light" to "medium," with lighter gauges easier to fret and bend, and heavier gauges louder and fuller-sounding but higher-tension.

How to use it

1. Match gauge to your guitar and playing style — lighter gauges are gentler on beginner fingers, heavier gauges suit strummers wanting more volume and body.
2. Restring one string at a time to keep even tension on the neck, tuning each string up to pitch before moving to the next.
3. Stretch new strings gently after installing and retune a few times, since new strings go out of tune quickly until they settle.

Care

Wipe strings down with a dry cloth after playing to remove sweat and oils, which are the main cause of premature corrosion. Replace strings every few months with regular play, or sooner if they sound dull or feel rough under the fingers.
