A hardware device that connects a guitar, microphone, or other audio source to a computer, converting the signal for recording software.
An audio interface is the piece of hardware that sits between your instrument (or a microphone) and your computer, converting an analog guitar or mic signal into digital audio a computer can record, and converting it back to analog for monitoring through speakers or headphones. It's the central hub of a home recording setup: a guitar can plug straight into an interface's instrument input, or a microphone can be routed in through an XLR input to capture a miked amp, and the number and type of inputs on an interface largely determines how many sources can be recorded at once.
Types

- Set input gain so the signal registers clearly without clipping (distorting) in your recording software.
- Monitor through headphones or studio monitors connected to the interface's output to hear your recorded signal with minimal delay.
Care
Keep the interface's drivers and firmware updated, store it away from dust and moisture, and handle input jacks and cables gently, since worn connectors are a common source of recording noise.
