Compressor Pedal

A dynamics pedal that evens out a guitar's volume by softening loud peaks and boosting quiet passages, adding sustain and consistency.

When you pluck a string, the note starts loud and then decays as the string loses energy. A compressor pedal reduces the volume of that initial loud peak and effectively makes the quieter tail of the note more audible, narrowing the gap between a guitar's loudest and quietest moments. The net effect is a smoother, more even sound with noticeably longer sustain โ€” the attack softens and the decay seems to last longer โ€” which is why compressors are closely associated with clean, snappy country licks, funk rhythm playing, and sustained single-note lead lines.

Types

  • Optical compressors โ€” use a light-dependent circuit for a smooth, musical compression curve, a common choice for guitar.
  • FET compressors โ€” react faster and can sound punchier and more aggressive, often used for a more noticeable "squash."
  • Studio-style rack compressors adapted to pedals โ€” offer more precise controls (attack, release, ratio) similar to studio recording compressors.

How to use it

  1. Place the compressor early in your signal chain, typically before gain pedals, since it's shaping the guitar's raw dynamics.
  2. Set the sustain/compression control for how much the pedal evens out your signal, and the level/output control to make up any volume lost in the process.
  3. Start with a moderate setting and compare the effect on and off โ€” over-compressing can make playing feel "squashed" or lifeless.
  4. Try using it as a clean volume boost by keeping sustain low and raising the level, a common trick for solos.

Care

No special maintenance beyond standard pedal care โ€” clean power supply, dry storage, and periodic checks of jacks and switches.

If a compressor makes your playing sound hissy or noisy, you may be compressing too hard โ€” back off the sustain/compression knob and let a little more of your natural dynamics through.
