Gig Bag / Hard Case

Every guitar needs some form of protective storage, and the choice generally comes down to a gig bag or a hard case. A gig bag is a padded soft case, usually with backpack-style straps and exterior pockets, that's light and convenient for regularly carrying a guitar to lessons or rehearsals, though its padding offers less protection than a hard shell if the guitar is dropped or something heavy lands on it. A hard case is a rigid shell lined with cushioning that offers much stronger impact and crush protection — often recommended especially for more delicate acoustic guitars — at the cost of being heavier and bulkier to store and transport.

Types

• Gig bag — lightweight, padded soft case with straps and storage pockets, ideal for regular local transport.
• Hard case — rigid shell case offering strong impact and crush protection, better for travel, shipping, or long-term storage.
• Flight case (ATA case) — heavy-duty, reinforced hard case built to survive airline cargo handling and professional touring.

How to use it

1. Choose a gig bag for everyday carrying to lessons, jams, or practice spaces where convenience and weight matter most.
2. Choose a hard case for air travel, shipping, or any situation where the guitar could be dropped, crushed, or handled roughly by someone else.
3. Always fully loosen strap and case latches gently rather than forcing them, and check that the guitar is snugly seated (not shifting) before closing and carrying.

Care

Store the case itself somewhere dry, and avoid leaving a guitar in either a gig bag or hard case in a hot car, since both can trap heat and moisture against the instrument. Periodically check zippers, latches, and handles for wear.
