Guitar Strap
A shoulder strap that supports the guitar's weight and holds it at a consistent playing position while standing.
A guitar strap attaches to two strap buttons (or is tied on, for classical guitars without buttons) and lets a player wear the guitar across one shoulder, distributing its weight so it can be played comfortably while standing. Beyond comfort, a strap also helps keep the guitar at a consistent angle and position relative to the body, which makes it easier to build reliable muscle memory for where the neck and fretting hand naturally sit, whether you're practicing, rehearsing, or performing.
Types
- Standard strap โ basic woven, leather, or synthetic strap attaching directly to the guitar's existing strap buttons.
- Padded/wide strap โ extra padding to spread the load across the shoulder, useful for heavier guitars.
- Locking strap โ includes a mechanical locking mechanism at the strap-button connection to prevent the guitar from accidentally slipping off during energetic playing.
How to use it
- Attach the strap to the strap buttons at the bottom (and usually the top horn or neck heel) of the guitar.
- Put the strap over one shoulder and let the guitar hang at a height where your fretting hand can reach the neck comfortably without hunching.
- Adjust the length so the playing position while standing closely matches your usual seated position, which keeps technique consistent between the two.
Care
Check strap buttons and strap ends periodically for wear, since a torn strap or loose button is the most common cause of a guitar being dropped. Consider strap locks if you play energetically or perform live.
