Guitar Humidifier
A small device that adds moisture around or inside an acoustic guitar to protect its wood from cracking and other damage caused by dry air.
Acoustic and classical guitars are built from thin sheets of wood that respond directly to changes in humidity. In overly dry conditions, that wood can shrink, leading to problems like fret ends protruding past the fretboard edge, poor string action, and in more serious cases, actual cracking of the top or back. A guitar humidifier adds moisture into the air immediately around or inside the guitar — most often inside the case or through the soundhole — to help keep the instrument near the generally recommended range of about 40–60% relative humidity, with roughly 45% often cited as an ideal target.
Types
- Soundhole humidifiers — hang or clip inside the soundhole, releasing moisture directly into the guitar's body; common and effective for regular use.
- Case humidifiers — placed inside a closed case rather than the guitar itself, humidifying the whole enclosed space.
- Disposable humidity packs — two-way humidity control packets placed in the case that both add and absorb moisture to maintain a target level automatically.
How to use it
- Check your guitar's or room's humidity with a hygrometer before assuming a humidifier is needed.
- Dampen or activate the humidifier according to its instructions (many need periodic re-wetting) and place it in the soundhole or case as designed.
- Close the case after placing the humidifier so moisture stays concentrated around the instrument rather than dispersing into the room.
- Recheck humidity periodically and re-moisten or replace the humidifier as needed, especially during dry winter months.
Care
Don't over-wet a humidifier or let it directly touch bare wood, since excess moisture can cause its own problems (swelling, warping, or mold). Empty and dry disposable packs before they're fully depleted or according to manufacturer guidance.
