Modeling Amplifier
A digital amplifier that uses onboard processing to emulate the sound of many different classic amps and effects in a single unit.
Modeling amplifiers use digital signal processing to simulate the sound and feel of many different classic amplifiers โ everything from a small vintage tweed combo to a modern high-gain stack โ plus a library of built-in effects, all inside one box. Instead of buying separate amps for clean, crunch, and lead tones, a player can switch between amp "models" and save custom presets, making a modeling amp a flexible, space-saving option for practicing, recording, and even gigging.
Types
- Combo modeling amps โ a modeling amp with a built-in speaker, ready to play out of the box.
- Modeling amp/profiler units ("amp-in-a-box" processors) โ headless units that model amps and effects and are meant to run into a separate power amp, PA, or studio monitors.
- Practice-focused modeling amps โ smaller, often battery- or USB-powered units built around headphone practice and simple presets rather than gigging volume.
How to use it
- Plug the guitar into the amp's input and select an amp model or preset using the front-panel controls or a companion app.
- Adjust the model's gain, EQ, and effects parameters to taste, then save the preset if the amp supports it, so you can recall it instantly later.
- Use the amp's headphone or USB output for silent practice or direct recording into a computer, one of the biggest practical advantages over a tube amp.
Care
Modeling amps are electronics-heavy, so treat them like any other digital device: keep them away from moisture, update firmware when the manufacturer releases it, and back up custom presets if the amp allows it.
