Intervals on the Fretboard

An interval is just the distance between two notes, measured in steps. Once intervals click, a lot of music theory stops being abstract trivia and starts being something you can see and feel directly on the fretboard โ€” chord construction, scale patterns, and even why certain licks sound "sad" or "happy" all trace back to intervals.

  • Basic familiarity with fret numbers and note names on at least the low E and A strings
  • A guitar to physically try each interval as you learn it

Steps

  1. Learn the unit: the semitone. One semitone equals one fret. A whole tone (or "whole step") equals two frets. Every interval in Western music is built from combinations of these two building blocks.

  2. Play a unison and an octave first, since they're the easiest to hear. Play any open string, then find the same note higher up (for example, low E open, and E again at the 12th fret of the same string) โ€” that's an octave, a doubling of the frequency, and it should sound like "the same note, higher," almost fused together when played simultaneously.

  3. Learn the perfect 5th, one of the most consonant, stable-sounding intervals. From any note on the low E or A string, count up 7 frets on the same string, or use the easier shape: same fret, two strings up, one fret over (this is also the classic "power chord" shape). Play the two notes together and notice how stable and open it sounds โ€” this is why power chords are built on this interval.

  4. Learn the major 3rd and minor 3rd, which define happy vs. sad. A major 3rd is 4 semitones up from a root note; a minor 3rd is 3 semitones up. Play a root note plus a major 3rd, listen, then play the same root with a minor 3rd instead โ€” this single semitone difference is the core reason major chords sound "bright" and minor chords sound "dark."

  5. Find intervals on a single string first, since it's the clearest way to see the distance. On the low E string, the root at fret 5 (A) to fret 9 (a major 3rd higher, C#) is 4 frets โ€” count frets directly to find any interval on one string before learning the shortcut shapes that jump between strings.

  6. Learn the common "shape" shortcuts across two strings, since real playing rarely stays on one string. For example: a major 3rd from a note on the low E string is found two strings up (D string) and one fret back, and a perfect 5th is two strings up, same fret. These shapes repeat all over the neck once you've internalized them for one pair of strings โ€” except across the uniquely-tuned G-to-B string pair, where every shape shifts by one extra fret.

Sing or hum each interval before and after playing it. Connecting the sound to the shape โ€” not just memorizing fret distances โ€” is what makes intervals genuinely useful for improvising and figuring out songs by ear.
